Hey productivity enthusiasts! As the year draws to a close and we gear up for the holidays, it’s often a time for reflection and planning for the year ahead. But before we hit the “pause” button, there’s still work to be done. This month, Asana delivers a batch of updates designed to streamline your workflow and help you wrap up those end-of-year projects with efficiency and ease. From enhanced organization in My Tasks to powerful new features for portfolios, there’s something for everyone in this December release. Let’s dive in and see how these improvements can help you finish the year strong.

(Personal / Basic) Group task by date fields

This month, Asana introduces a simple but powerful enhancement to help you bring order to your work. Now, you can group tasks by more than just due dates in your project and My Tasks whether you want to see tasks grouped by start date. Completion date, or even custom fields, you have the flexibility to organize your work in a way that makes the most sense to you.

This means you can easily visualize upcoming tasks, track progress on ongoing projects, or even identify potential bottlenecks. You even effortlessly spot all tasks scheduled to start next week, or quickly review completed tasks from the last month.

This is Asana organization features that helps you group by categories.

(Personal / Basic) Board view without task limit

Moving on a large project with what feels like a million moving parts? Previously, Asana’s board view had limitations on the number of tasks you could group, which could make navigating complex projects a bit tricky. But now, those limitations are gone! Enjoy the freedom to group tasks in your project and My Task boards without worrying about hitting any limits. This means you can create a truly comprehensive view of your project, no matter how big or small, and easily manage all your tasks in one place.

(Personal / Basic) Improved customization in board view

Like to have things just so? Asana’s board view just got even more customizable.  Now, you can group tasks by assignee, making it super easy to see who’s working on what. Need to prioritize certain tasks? No problem! You can sort your groups however you like. And keep your board tidy, you can create a board that perfectly reflects your workflow and preferences, giving you a clear and organized view of your tasks.

(Personal / Basic) Enhanced project overview in iOS

Need to check in on a project while you’re away from your desk? Asana’s mobile app for iOS just got a serious update. The project overview has been enhanced to give you a clearer and more comprehensive view of your project’s progress, all from the convenience of your iPhone or iPad. This means you can stay informed and keep projects moving forward, even when you’re on the go.  With this, you can quickly glance at your phone to get a snapshot of project status update, see upcoming deadlines, and even review connected goals and milestones.

(Personal / Basic) Granular email notification settings

Feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of email notifications? It’s a common problem, and Asana has heard its user’s feedback. This update gives users much finer control over the types of notifications they receive. Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, you can now pick and choose which events trigger an email.

This means you can prioritize the notifications that truly matter to you. Perhaps you only want to be alerted when a task is assigned to you directly, or maybe prefer to receive updates only for projects with approaching deadlines. With these granular settings, you can cut through the noise and ensure you’re only receiving the most relevant and timely information.

(Personal / Basic) Tab management improvement

Do you have a favorite view in Asana that you always seem to be clicking on? Maybe you’re a “list view” person, or perhaps you prefer the visual overview of “board view.’ Now, Asana lets you personalize your experience by setting your preferred tab as the default in projects, portfolios, and teams. This small but mighty improvement saves you valuable clicks and ensures you always land on the view that works best for you.

No more extra steps to get to the information you need most. Whether you’re diving into a project, reviewing your portfolio, or collaborating with your team, you can streamline your workflow by starting with your preferred view.

(Starter / Premium) Custom sorting in Gantt view

Gantt charts are incredibly useful for visualizing project timelines and dependencies, but sometimes you need to see the information presented in a specific way to gain the most valuable insights. With this update, Asana gives you more control over how your Gantt chart is organized. Instead of a default sorting order, you now have the flexibility to group tasks based on your specific needs.

Want to see tasks grouped by assignment to understand individual workloads? Or perhaps you need to group priority to identify critical tasks? With custom sorting in Gantt view, you can arrange your tasks in a way that makes the most sense for your project.

(Advanced / Business) Portfolio saved views

Do you find yourself constantly adjusting filters and sorting options in your Asana portfolios to get the view you need? It can be tedious to repeatedly set up the same view, especially when you’re working with multiple portfolios. With this update, Asana introduces saved views for portfolios, allowing you to customize and save your preferred views for quick and easy access.

This means you can create different views tailored to specific needs, such as a view that shows all projects “at risk” or a view that prioritizes projects by a custom field like “strategic importance.” Once you’ve created these views, they’re just a click away.

(Advanced / Business) Request access to private work in portfolios

Asana understands that transparency and access to information are crucial for effective collaboration, but it’s also important to respect privacy when needed. With this update, Asana makes it easier to navigate private work within portfolios. Now, when a portfolio includes private projects or nested portfolios that you don’t have access to, you’ll be clearly informed with a banner.

This banner not only alerts you to the presence of private work but also provides a direct way to view a list of these private items. You can see helpful information like project admins when the work was added, and who added it.

(Enterprise) View only license

In large organizations, keeping everyone on the same page can be a challenge, especially when it comes to project visibility. Asana now offers a “view-only” license designed to increase transparency across teams without adding unnecessary costs. This license type allows individuals to access essential information like goals, reports, portfolios, and projects, even if they don’t actively participate in the work itself.

This means departments like leadership, finance, or HR can stay informed about the progress of various initiatives without needing full access to edit or comment. It’s a great way to promote alignment and understanding across the organization, ensuring everyone has the visibility they need to support overall objectives.

View only members can see any Asana object they are given access to but cannot collaborate or take any .
